Scott Wolfes won the GSGA Junior Championship in record-setting fashion, shooting 15-under 201 at Sea Island Golf Club’s Retreat course to win by four strokes.
Wolfes, who lives on St. Simons Island, led after an opening 69 and expanded his lead with scores of 66 and 67. His 201 total is a tournament record.
Ollie Schniederjans of Powder Springs, who won the Georgia PGA Junior Championship three weeks earlier, was second at 205 with scores of 71-67-67. Michael Garretson, who plays on the Harrison high school golf team with Schniederjans, was third at 210, followed by Will Evans of McDonough at 211 and Jack Walsh of Lawrenceville at 213.
Tying for sixth at 214 were Anders Albertson of Woodstock, Gus Wagoner of Duluth and Henry Mabbett of Griffin.
Metz romps by 14
in GSGA Girls
Carrie Metz of Carnesville shot 6-under 210 at Polo G&CC in Cumming to win the GSGA Girls Championship by a whopping 14 strokes.
Metz posted scores of 68-73-69 to easily outdistance Caitlin Watts of LaGrange, who was second at 224.
Rinko Mitsunaga of Roswell and Rachel Dai of Suwanee, both 12 years old, were fourth and fifth respectively at 227 and 228. Sloan Shanahan of Suwanee and Jessica Welch of Lavonia tied for fifth at 230.
Metz broke the tournament scoring record of 215, set seven years ago by Jean Reynolds of Newnan, currently one of the top players on the Futures Tour. It was the fourth top 10 finish in the tournament for Metz, who was competing for the final time in the championship.
Stackhouse scores
AJGA victory
Jonesboro’s Mariah Stackhouse scored her first victory in an American Junior Golf Association tournament, winning a recent event at WindStone GC in Ringgold.
Stackhouse, 15, shot 68-73-66 for a 3-under 207 total and a 3-stroke victory. Three straight birdies helped her secure the victory.
Tying for ninth at 222 were Yugene Lee of Athens, Amelia Hill of St. Simons Island and Caitlin Watts.
In the boys division, Sam Straka of Valdosta tied for second at 206, three strokes behind the winner. Straka was the first round leader after shooting 64, and was still two in front of the field after a 71. He shot another 71 the final round but was overtaken.
Kelby Burton of Evans was fourth at 207, shooting 66 the first round and 69 the final day. Zach Estep of Lawrenceville was fifth at 209, with Austin Barreras of Peachtree City 13th at 213. Kevin Lee of Dacula and Ted Moon of Lilburn were 15th at 214.
Hines, Alexander win
at Callaway Gardens
Michael Hines of Acworth and Amira Alexander of Alpharetta were winners in the American Junior Golf Association Junior All-Star at Callaway Gardens.
Hines shot 222 over the demanding Mountain View course, which hosted the PGA Tour for more than a decade, to tie two other juniors, and won on the first playoff hole with a 20-foot birdie putt.
Jimmy Beck of Columbus tied for fourth at 224, with Sanders Park of Alpharetta 10th at 229. Garrett Marschke of Suwanee was 13th at 230 and Mark Kim of Rome placed 17th at 232.
Alexander shot 77-76-73 for a 226 total to win the girls division by two strokes.
The tournament was for juniors age 12-15.
In other AJGA tournaments:
Stackhouse was third and Kendall Wright of Duluth fourth in the Heritage Junior in Bluffton, S.C. Stackhouse was nine strokes behind the winner with a 218 total, with Wright next at 220.
In the boys division, Jack Howard of Cartersville tied for sixth at 215 with a final round 69. Christian Humber of Fayetteville tied for ninth at 217.
In a Junior All-Star event in Charlotte, Rinko Mitsunaga was third at 223, with Emily Kurey of Alpharetta fifth at 225.
Carter takes second
in Southern Junior
Augusta’s Brian Carter placed second in the Southern Junior at Reynolds Landing on Lake Oconee, shooting 3-under 213 to finish 3 strokes behind the winner.
Sepp Straka of Valdosta tied for seventh at 217 with Jordan Janico of Duluth ninth at 218. Tying for 10th at 219 were Will Evans, Drew Czuchry of Auburn and Henry Mabbett, who shot 67 the final day.
In the 13-14 age group, Preston Heyward was a distant second at 227, 14 strokes behind the division winner. Matthew Beringer of Macon was third at 229.
Sawyer, Wright take
titles at Cateechee
Joel Sawyer of Elberton and Kendall Wright were the overall winners in a Georgia PGA Junior Tour event at Cateechee in Hartwell. Sawyer shot 71-74—145 to win boys 16-18 by three strokes, with Wright taking the girls 15-18 title with a 159 total.
Sanders Park shot 71-77—148 to win boys 14-15 by eight strokes over Riley Davenport of Woodstock. Kyle Mueller of Watkinsville was the 11-13 winner at 156, with Alex Grossman of Acworth and Tyler Tucker of Cochran tying for second in 16-18 at 156.
Diane Lim of Norcross was the girls 11-14 winner with a 167 total.
Guglielmo a winner
at Barnsley Gardens
Chris Guglielmo of Cumming won the boys 14-15 and overall titles in a Georgia PGA Junior Tour event at Barnsley Gardens. Guglielmo shot 71-75—146 to win his age group by nine strokes and the overall title by three.
Chase Wood of Acworth was the 16-18 winner and second overall at 77-72—149. Will Delahanty of Norcross and Chris Kupcewicz of Acworth were second in the division at 155, with Cameron Winders of Atlanta second in 14-15 at 155.
Will Withers of Evans shot 73-76—149 to win the 11-13 age group by three strokes over Kyle Mueller. Emee Herbert of Roswell was the girls winner at 172, one stroke ahead of Hannah Duffie of Dalton.
Graham, Voll win
on SJGT in Marietta
Austin Graham of Powder Springs and Katie Voll of Alpharetta were winners in a Southeastern Junior Golf Tour event at Marietta CC, with Georgians taking first in all five divisions.
Graham shot 68-70—138 to win boys 16-19 by one stroke over Ian Phillips of Acworth and Ryan Trocchio of Norcross. Daniel Kim of Kennesaw shot 71-69—140 to edge Will McFarlin of Alpharetta by one stroke. Joe Philaphet of Riverdale was the 12-13 winner at 71-70—141, one shot ahead of Matthew Beringer.
Voll was the girls 15-19 winner with scores of 69-72—141, three strokes ahead of Carrie Metz. Jessica Welch was third at 146. Sloan Shanahan shot 73-74—147 to win girls 12-14 by five over Michaela Owen of Alpharetta.
3 Evans boys
win at West Lake
Boys from Evans swept all three age divisions in an SJGT event at West Lake CC in suburban Augusta.
Robert Robertson shot 71-70—141 to win the 16-19 division by two over Evans’ Cody Shafer. Evan Usry was the 14-15 winner at 144, six ahead of Evans’ Austin Vick. Will Watson was the 12-13 winner at 155, with Parker Derby of Columbus second at 157.
Lauren Smith of Powder Springs shot 158 to finish first in the girls 15-19 competition.
In other SJGT events:
Wheaton Hall of Springfield was the boys 14-15 winner in a playoff in Point Clear, Ala., shooting 148 and winning a playoff.
In Knoxville, three Georgians were second in their divisions. Patrick Garrett of Powder Springs shot 142 to finish one shot back in boys 16-19. Nicholas Mineo of Cumming was second in 12-13 at 156, two behind the winner, with Amira Alexander two back in girls 15-19 at 151.
Emily Kurey and Gabby Gregory of Alpharetta were girls winners in Tallahassee. Gregory shot 154 to win by six in the 15-19 division, with Kurey the 12-14 winner at 157.
Jim Henderson of Macon was the boys 14-15 winner with a 152 total, with Jonathan Keppler of Marietta second in boys 12-13 at 151.
Austin Graham scored a second win at the Furman University course in Greenville, S.C., winning in a playoff over Allen Bradford of Elberton after both shot 150. David Yowell of Marietta was second in boys 14-15 at 155, with Josh Crawford of Norcross second in 12-13 at 157.
Caitlin Watts was the girls winner by 12 strokes, shooting 69-74—143. Kimberly Graff of Lilburn and Lindsay Adams of Lawrenceville tied for second at 155.
Mitsunaga medalist
in U.S. Girls qualifier
Rinko Mitsunaga shot 73 at Country Club of Roswell, here home course, to earn medalist honors in a qualifier for the U.S. Girls Championship. Katy Harris of St. Simons Island was second at 74, with Sloan Shanahan shooting 76 and advancing in a playoff.
Mariah Stackhouse also shot 76, but was the lone player who failed to advance in the 4 players for 3 spots playoff.
Kevin Lee was the lone Georgian to advance from a U.S. Junior Championship qualifier at the UGA course in Athens, shooting 69-78—147 to tie for third and get one of four spots.
