JUNIOR GOLF TALENT ON DISPLAY AT UPCOMING NIKE CUP

NEWNAN, Ga. – Canongate Golf Clubs  (www.canongategolf.com) is proud to announce the 3rd Annual Nike Cup will be contested at Whitewater Creek Country Club on Saturday and Sunday, September 5 and 6, 2009.  The Arnold Palmer designed venue is considered among the best championship layouts on the south side of Atlanta.  This event matches the top junior golfers from the Canongate Junior Tour against those from the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail in Alabama in a head-to-head Ryder Cup style event.

Canongate will be seeking revenge as the Robert Trent Jones Trail juniors won the matches in both 2007 and 2008.  Saturday will feature two-player team matches, with Sunday showcasing the traditional Singles Pairings.  Five matches of nine holes each will be played over the course of the two day event to determine the overall team champion.  Prior to Saturday’s matches, opening ceremonies for the event will be held at Whitewater Creek Country Club in Fayetteville at 8:00 am.

Immediately following the Opening Ceremony, team Fourball matches begin at 9:00 am.  Team Foursomes will begin at 12:30 pm, with team Scramble starting at 4:00 pm. Sunday Singles matches will begin at 8:30 am and 12:00 pm, with an Awards Ceremony following play at approximately 3:30 pm.  Spectators are welcome and all events are open to the public.

The Canongate Junior Tour is a competitive junior golf tour that is designed to both introduce young juniors to tournament play and take accomplished junior golfers to the next level. The tour consists of 250 players from age 7 to 17. These juniors compete in regional events throughout the year and four “majors” held in the summer months. All competition throughout the year has led to earning points toward becoming a team member in the coveted Nike Cup.

Castro places second on Nationwide Tour Ex-Tech star within range of PGA Tour card

In professional golf, the difference of just one shot in a round can have a huge impact on the career of a player, even if that shot takes place outside tournament competition.

After finishing second in a recent Nationwide Tour tournament in Wichita, Alpharetta’s Roberto Castro is in position to earn an exempt spot on that tour next year, and will have the chance to play his way onto the 2011 PGA Tour if he excels the rest of this season.

Seven Georgia Golfer Qualify for U.S. Mid-Amateur

Three players tied for medalist honors at 3-under-par 69, including two Georgians – Richie Taylor of Snellville and reigning GSGA Player of the Year David Noll Jr. of Dalton. They were joined by Herbie Sargent of Pelzer, S.C.

Bill Hodges of Thomasville, Ga., was the lone player at 70 to also qualify. Behind him were five players tied at 71 for the four remaining qualifying spots. Chris Hall of Kennesaw, Ga., and Kris Mikkelsen of Atlanta, Ga.
