Lakers’ Thomas tied for eighth with 1-under par 71
LAKELAND, Fla. – February 15, 2010 - Battling windy and cold weather conditions, the Clayton State Laker men’s golf team got off to a solid start on Monday at the Matlock Collegiate Classic at the Lone Palm Golf Club.
The Lakers fired an 11-over par 299 for their opening round, tied for ninth overall in the 15-team field. Clayton State holds a one-stroke lead over Nova Southeastern and a two-stroke advantage on St. Leo. The Lakers trail both Rollins and host Florida Southern by four strokes and Lynn and Delta State by five strokes. #1-rnaked Barry University of Miami took the first-round lead with a sizzling’ 9-under 279. West Florida is ten shots back of the leader at 289 and in second place after round one.
Individually for Clayton State, senior Neil Thomas had an solid opening round with a 1-under 71. He is six strokes off the lead of overall leader Victor Billskoog from Barry. In addition to Thomas, senior All-American Wade Bindfield is tied for 17th at 1-over 73.
Rounding out the Laker scoring includes sophomore Clark Nelson tied for 44th with a 5-over 77, junior Adam Novakowski tied for 54th with a 6-over 78, and freshman Josh Ransby is 75th with an 85.
Originally, 36 holes were scheduled for Monday. But weather delays forced the second round to be suspended due to darkness. It will be completed on Tuesday morning, followed by the third round at the Lone Palm Golf Club.
