Dunne comes from behind in difficult conditions

Back to Back wins for Stevens

Wesley Chapel, FL- On December 5-6, the Hurricane Junior Golf Tour (HJGT) hosted its season-ending, Golfweek/Titleist ranked Tour Championship at the Saddlebrook Resort in Wesley Chapel, Florida. With over 100 players from 16 countries and 11 states, this was the largest field in the HJGT’s two-year history. Heavy, saturating rains and high winds threatened the tournament, but the players were able to complete the entire 36-holes thanks to the hard work of the course staff. Saddlebrook Resort, which is already a difficult course with many hazards, was made even more difficult with the weather. The juniors endured the conditions and the best players came out on top.

In the Boys 16-19 division, the defending champion, Lushen Evans of Summerville, South Carolina, jumped out to an early lead after firing a first round of even-par, 70. Not far behind Evans was Matt Youmans of Lawrenceville, Georgia, who trailed by two after a first round of two-over par, 72. All tied for third place, Gary Dunne of Greystone, Ireland, Josh O’Neal of Simpsonville, South Carolina, and Coley Davis of Bluffton, South Carolina, each turned in a first round of four-over, 74, and were all in contention for the title. During the final round of play, there were large shifts in the leaderboard. Gary Dunne started off his final round hot with birdies on the fourth and fifth holes. After giving a couple back, Dunne finished his final round at even-par, 70, and was able to hold on and take the Boys 16-19 Tour Championship title with a tournament total of 144. Dunne’s win was helped by his par-4 performance, which was the best in the division, and his 28 pars. Patrick Grahek of Alpharetta, Georgia was tied for sixth after his first round of five-over, 75. Grahek played strong his final round and turned in a final round of even-par, 70, for a tournament total of 145. Grahek’s play during the final round moved him into second place in the division. Reed Kerwin of Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina, was also tied for sixth after a first round, 75. Kerwin had two birdies on the front nine to put him at two-under par, but he double bogeyed the 13th and bogeyed the 14th to give him a final round of one-over par, 71. Kerwin’s tournament total of 146 put him into third place. Lushen Evans, the first round leader, was nursing a knee injury and struggled down the final stretch. Evans turned in a final round of 77 for a tournament total of 147 to tie him for fourth. Matt Youmans had a string of bogeys during his final round and final round of 78 and tournament total of 150 dropped him to tie for ninth place.

In the Boys 13-15 division, Chris Sells of Savannah, Georgia took control of the lead after the first round with a three-over, 73. Bernardo Curbelo of Weston, Florida was in second with a first round, 74, and Rigel Fernandes of Mangalore, India was in third with a five-over, 75. The race for the Boys 13-15 Tour Championship title was close, but a few birdies in the final round was the deciding factor. Rigel Fernandes started with a few bogeys during the final round, but he was able to gain some strokes back with two birdies. Fernandes’s par-5 stroke average of 4.50 and 21 pars helped him turn in a final round score of two-over par, 72, and a tournament total of 147 for his third victory on tour this season. Sells also had a few bogeys during the final round, but was unable to gain any strokes back. Sells turned in a final round of five-over par, 75, for a tournament total of 148 and the second place finish. Curbelo faltered a little on the back, but he made a couple of birdies and kept his momentum. Curbelo finished the second round with a 76 and a tournament total of 150, which was just enough to give him third place in the Boys 13-15 division.

In the Boys 10-12 division, Jack Comstock of Jacksonville, Florida, and Tian Yi Cen of Bradenton, Florida were tied for first after each turned in a first round of one-over, 71. Comstock and Cen battled back and forth during the round, but eventually Comstock pulled away and was able to finish two strokes better than Cen on the final day. Comstock’s final round of 74 and a tournament total of 145 gave him the Boys 10-12 division Tour Championship title, his eighth victory of the season. Cen had a final round of 76 for a tournament total of 147 and second place. Roland Morris of Hickory, North Carolina turned in rounds of 81-78 for a tournament total of 159 and a third place finish.

In the Girls 15-19 division, Kristine Odaiyar of Ocala, Florida, took a three-stroke first round lead after firing a one-over par, 71. Sammi Stevens of Hereford, Texas was tied for second after a first round of four-over, 74, and Ai Miyazawa of Miyazakikan, Japan was in fourth after a first round, 76. The final round saw a lot of shifting. Sammi Stevens had bogeys on the sixth and seventh holes, but was able to gain both strokes back with birdies on the 9th and 14th. Stevens’ final round of even-par, 70, was enough to move her into first place with a tournament total of 144. Stevens had the best par-4 performance in the division and the Tour Championship victory makes it back-to-back wins for Stevens. Miyazawa fought for the top spot the entire final round. Her spectacular play gave her a one-under par, 69, the only under par round for the tournament. It was not quite enough for the top spot, but Miyazawa’s tournament total of 145 gave her second place. Kristine Odaiyar had a difficult final round and she turned in a six-over, 76, for a tournament total of 147, which dropped her into third place.

In the Girls 10-14 division, Caroline Quamme of Potomac, Maryland was in the lead after the first round with an 82. Mallory Etcheberry of Wesley Chapel, Florida was in second with an 83 and Mia Zanghetti of Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida was in third with an 85. Mia Zanghetti came back the final round and played wonderfully for a one-over par, 71. Zanghetti’s tournament total of 156 gave her the Tour Championship title in the Girls 10-14 division. Mallory Etcheberry stayed in second place with her final round of 82 and tournament total of 165. Caroline Quamme carded a final round of 84 for a tournament total of 166 and the third place finish.

All Ticket Proceeds Will Benefit Local Not-For-Profits

ATHENS, Ga., December 8, 2009 – Local not-for profits will have the opportunity to add thousands of dollars to their bottom line thanks to an innovative partnership with the Athens Classic at UGA and the PGA TOUR.

The Nationwide Tour event is participating in the TICKETS Fore CHARITY™ program, which has raised more than $4 million for not-for-profits in other PGA TOUR communities. The Athens Classic at UGA is scheduled for April 26-May 2 at the University of Georgia golf course.

Participating not-for-profits have the ability to sell event tickets and keep 100 percent of the proceeds from the sale. The University of Georgia will handle all transactions, but will direct all funds back to the ticket holder’s designated not-for-profit. UGA will even absorb credit card processing and distribution costs associated with the transactions.

“Every ticket buyer will be asked to designate a not-for-profit. We will process and manage these ticket orders, with 100 percent of the proceeds going right back to the selling organizations or designated not-for-profit,” said Tournament Director Dave Cousart. “If a not-for-profit can sell $10,000 worth of tickets, they have just added $10,000 to their budget.

“This is just another example of how the tournament is exposing new audiences to the world’s best golfers while providing significant assistance to the community and its institutions.”

A mandatory informational meeting will be held Dec. 14 in Foundry Park Inn & Spa’s Foundry Ballroom. Refreshments and snacks will be provided. Participating organizations must be a registered 501(c)3. Interested groups can register for the meeting at www.athensclassic.uga.edu.

Weekly tickets purchased in advance of the event through the TICKETS Fore CHARITY™ program will cost $25 and will provide access to all four days of the tournament. Tickets sold at the gate the week of the event will cost $10 per day or $35 for the weekly pass with all gate proceeds going to need-based scholarships on the University campus. In addition, all net proceeds from the event not generated through ticket sales will go to support need-based scholarships at the University of Georgia.

The Athens stop on the Nationwide Tour is entering its fifth year, with the first four being played under the banner of the Athens Regional Foundation Classic. It is one of only two Nationwide Tour stops in Georgia, the other being the South Georgia Classic in Valdosta.

ABOUT THE ATHENS CLASSIC AT UGA
The Athens Classic at UGA will be held at the University of Georgia Golf Course from April 26-May 2, 2009. The event will be operated by the University’s Auxiliary Services Department. The Athens Classic at UGA will be the only event on the Nationwide Tour that is owned and operated by an institution of higher education. All net proceeds from the event will support need-based scholarships for UGA students through the Arch Foundation. For more on the event, visit www.athensclassic.uga.edu.

ABOUT THE NATIONWIDE TOUR
Founded (1990), owned and operated by the PGA TOUR, the Nationwide Tour identifies those players who are ready to compete and win on golf’s biggest stage. As the “official proving ground” of the PGA TOUR, two out of three PGA TOUR members are Nationwide Tour alumni. At the end of the 2009 official season, Tour alumni had won 260 PGA TOUR titles, including 13 majors and three PLAYERS Championships. Twenty-five PGA TOUR cards and $18.5 million were at stake over the course of 29 events in 2009. Recognizing the Tour’s growing stature, Nationwide Insurance has renewed its umbrella sponsorship of the Nationwide Tour through 2012. The PGA TOUR, through the efforts of its three tours and their tournaments, sponsors, players and volunteers, supports over 2,000 local charities and has surpassed $1.3 billion in charitable giving. To learn more about the PGA TOUR and Nationwide Tour and to follow the season-long quest for a PGA TOUR card, visit www.PGATOUR.COM.

“Achasta has shown a strong commitment to its environmental program,” said Jim Sluiter, staff ecologist for the Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Programs. “They are to be commended for their efforts to provide a sanctuary for wildlife on the golf course property.”

“The Achasta golf course staff and community are excited about our designation as a ‘Certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary’,” said Ron Larson, managing director of Achasta. “We welcome the daily challenge of improving our environmental performance and doing our part in preservation and conservation.”

ATLANTA – Georgia governor Sonny Perdue has proclaimed Saturday, September 19, 2009, as “Girls Golf Day” in Georgia. On that day, the Georgia State Golf Association (GSGA), Georgia Junior Golf Foundation (GJGF) and Girls Scouts of America are teaming up to provide instructional clinics at eight sites across Georgia.

The clinics are open at no charge to all girls ages 6-17. A variety of activities, including instruction on putting, chipping and long game, will be offered for all skill levels. Girls can bring their own golf clubs, or clubs will be provided as needed. Participants will also have a brief introduction to etiquette and the Rules of Golf.

In the Proclamation, Governor Perdue states, “Athletics play an important role in the development of discipline, initiative, confidence and leadership skills; and involvement in sports provides girls with an opportunity to expand their social worlds as well as develop their emotional and physical well-being.”

Allen Peake of Macon, a GSGA volunteer and member of the Georgia House of Representatives, worked with Gov. Perdue to produce the Proclamation. “I am grateful to Governor Sonny Perdue for proclaiming September 19, 2009, as Girls Golf Day in Georgia,” Peake said. “We should do everything in our power to encourage girls and young women to discover the joy of playing golf, and to develop the life lessons of integrity, sportsmanship, and honor that are inherent in the game of golf.”

Clinics are being held at sites in Albany, Athens, Atlanta, Augusta, Columbus, LaGrange, Macon and Savannah. See the list below for site addresses and specific times. To register for a clinic, please email or call the GSGA (mbell@gsga.org, 770-955-4272 or 800-949-4742) with the following information by Wednesday, September 16:

. Girls’ Name
. Age
. Email Address
. Site Selection
. If golf clubs are needed

“My hope is that this day will spark interest among young women, like my 14-year-old daughter, that will grow into a lifelong passion of playing, and competing, in the wonderful sport of golf,” said Peake.

Founded in 1916, the Georgia State Golf Association received its official charter on June 24, 1924. Since that date, the GSGA has grown to one of the largest state amateur golf associations in the country, with over 350 member clubs and 85,000 individual members. With a mission to promote and preserve amateur golf in the state of Georgia, GSGA offers a computerized handicapping service, course rating and measuring, and annually conducts a full schedule of statewide competitions for men and women of all age groups. Other services include a summer-long junior sectional program, award-winning Golf Georgia magazine, membership recognition and rewards programs and a charitable foundation administering two college scholarship programs.

COLUMBUS, Ga. – With a 20-foot birdie putt from the fringe at the 18th hole, Jimmy Thomas of Johns Creek fired a 1-over-par 72 in the final round to post a tournament-total 1-over 214 and edge four-time champion and second-round leader Spencer Sappington of Milton by two strokes at Georgia Senior Championship. The 23rd annual event took place at Green Island Country Club, August 26-28.

Local Bobby Brent of Columbus and Jerry Greenbaum of Atlanta battled for the top spot during the early part of the final round, but both wound up tied for third at 217, three strokes back of Thomas. Bill Leonard of Kennesaw, Bill Newsom of Clarkesville and past champion Larry Clark of Kingston all tied for fifth at 218. Karl Simon of Lawrenceville and another past champion, Tommy Reid of Macon, shared eighth place at 219. Bill Blalock of Atlanta posted the low round of the day, 69, to move into a 10th-place tie with Ernie Venet of Moultrie at 220.

Defending champion and Green Island member Bill Ploeger of Columbus posted a final-round 74 and finished tied for 12th place.

Sappington began the day with a one-stroke lead over Clark and Thomas, but it was Greenbaum, playing one group ahead, who made the early charge with birdies on his first two holes. He added another birdie with a long putt on No. 7 to move to 1-under-par for the tournament, the only player to break into the red numbers during the round. Sappington had bogeyed his first hole to move back to even and added two more bogeys at holes four and six, which meant Greenbaum’s birdie at the seventh gave him a three-stroke lead.

Despite a bogey at No. 9, Greenbaum sat at even-par and held a two-shot advantage over Sappington at the turn. But it was still a five-man race, as Thomas and Brent were both hanging in there at 1-over, and Clark dropped back to 2-over with Sappington. Thomas played a steady front nine with just one bogey (No. 5).

Things got a little more interesting on the back nine. Both Sappington (bogey on No. 10) and Clark (No. 11) dropped to 3-over, and Brent posted three bogies, one double and a birdie in a five-hole stretch from 11-15 to move to 3-over as well. Greenbaum stayed steady with pars through 14, and Thomas squared things up, moving to even-par with a birdie on 13.

Greenbaum’s approach at the 15th landed in a bush off the green, and after a drop, he wound up with double bogey. Thomas held sole possession of the lead, but not for long. His tee shot on the par-3, 173-yard 16th found the water, and he had to settle for a double bogey of his own. This time, however, he wasn’t tied with Greenbaum (who had bogeyed 16 himself), but Sappington, who made a 10-foot par putt on 16 to move back to 2-over and knot it up with Thomas. Greenbaum sat one stroke back.

Both Sappington and Thomas parred the par-5 17th, and went to the 18th tee still tied. Thomas’ approach landed just in the fringe on the high side of the green, while Sappington’s came up short and rolled back into a bunker fronting the green. His bunker shot just missed the green, and he couldn’t get up and down for par. Thomas, just needing par to win the Championship, sunk the 20-footer for birdie.

Playing in just his third Senior Championship, Thomas described his win as “very emotional” and said it was a “great testimony.” Over the last year he had battled neck cancer, undergoing surgery, chemotherapy and radiation, and didn’t know if he would ever play golf again. After picking the game back up just this past April, he said his goal for this week was to “enjoy myself and have fun.”

The final round was delayed two and a half hours on Friday after 1.8 inches of rain fell on the golf course in the early morning hours.

The Georgia Senior Championship was conducted by the Georgia State Golf Association. Entries were open to male amateur golfers at least 55 years old as of August 26, 2009, who belong to a GSGA Member Club. The field of 144 was determined by the lowest USGA Handicap Indexes.

After the second round, the field was cut to the low 70 players and ties, with the cutline falling at 14-over 156 and 74 players advancing.

MARIETTA, Ga. – Entries are now being accepted for the 2009 Georgia Team Championship, which takes place October 31-November 1 at The Georgia Club in Statham. This event is open to four-man teams of male amateur golfers who are Georgia residents and selected by their GSGA Member Club.

The format of the event is one round of four-ball stroke play and one round of the best three out of four stroke play. Last year, Atlanta Athletic Club of Duluth turned in rounds of 74, 75 and 76 in the individual stroke play round to post a two-day, team total of 367 and capture its first Georgia Team Championship (in the event’s current format). This will be the fifth consecutive year that The Georgia Club has played host to the championship.

Club teams must enter online by going to the GSGA website (www.gsga.org) and clicking the Online Registration button at the top of the page. One team representative per entry from each GSGA member club should complete the online registration process. Once accepted, the team representative will receive a confirmation e-mail with a link to an acceptance letter. Within that letter is the team roster and club officer signature form that needs to be completed and returned to GSGA’s Rules and Competitions Department. The deadline for entries is Wednesday, October 7 at 5:00 p.m.

The field size is 30 teams. Entries are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis.

The entry period is also currently open for the Georgia Women’s Team Championship (through September 9) and the Atlanta Amateur Match Play Championship (through September 30).

Any questions regarding GSGA competitions may be directed to the Rules and Competitions Department at 770-955-4272 or 800-949-4742, or via email at info@gsga.org.
