Langdale and Metz capture Spring Championship titles

Braselton, Ga-The Hurricane Junior Golf Tour made its second of nine stops in the Peach State (Georgia) this past weekend and was greeted with its largest field size of the year. 108 players representing 16 distinct countries ranging from the United States to Estonia to Ireland and Iceland competed to the very end for the very important 1,500 HJGT Player of the Year points, as well as, a Tournament Exemption from the AJGA for the Boys 16-19 and Girls Overall Champion. Also at stake in the season’s second Major Championship was a special performance based exemption for the Boys 13-15 Division Champion into the AJGA Junior All-Star Series. With so much at stake this weekend the members of the Hurricane Junior Golf Tour put it all on the line and then some and came up with some of the best scores we have seen all season. Despite playing in difficult conditions in Sunday’s Final Round, players managed to make for an exciting finish, including the first Boys 16-19 Sudden Death Playoff of the season.

In the Boys 16-19 Division we saw a fierce competition in which an extra, 37th, hole was required to determine our Champion. Austin Langdale of Townville, South Carolina and Keagan Cummings of Dublin, Ireland battled all weekend to try and determine supremacy over an elite field of Junior Golfers from around the world and on the 37th Hole of Competition a birdie decided our match. After watching Langdale stick his approach shot on the Par Five, Fifteenth Hole, to under five feet the pressure was placed squarely on the shoulders of the Cummings to deliver. After hitting an equally impressive shot, Cummings addressed his putt; however, would end up a rotation shy of sending the Playoff to a second hole, thus giving the Championship to Langdale. Langdale’s impressive performance over the course of the weekend can be attributed to his ability to hit fairways and greens throughout the tournament and convert on an impressive five birdie opportunities including playing the Par Four’s to a 4.05 stroke average over the weekend, just one over-par. Following right behind Langdale and Cummings this weekend was Jack Hume, also of Ireland, who trailed Langdale by three shots heading into the final round and would narrow the gap to just one when all was said and done. Hume finished his tournament with a four-over par, 146.

Heading into the Final Round of the Boys 13-15 Division seven players were within five strokes of the leader and thus no one could foresee who would be hoisting the trophy Sunday afternoon. Tyler Shope of Wilsonville, Alabama opened his tournament with a one-under par, 70, and would be heavily pursued by many accomplished juniors players, including the likes of fellow Alabama native Jacob Harper of Valley, Alabama and Keenan Huskey of Greenville, South Carolina. Throughout the final round it was apparent that the race for the title would begin to fade to a two-man race as many players had trouble putting together a second consecutive round in the low 70s. Harper and Huskey battled back and forth and on the 18th Hole with both players drawing even at three-over par, Harper managed to convert on his birdie opportunity while watching his Final Round playing partner struggle to make bogey, and thus giving the Championship and AJGA Exemption to Harper. Harper’s six converted birdies and ability to shoot a combined two-under par on the Par Fours and Fives this weekend were a sure-fire reason why this High School Standout was able to take home the trophy and his first HJGT Title of the Season. Rounding out the Boys 13-15 Division was a player who needs no introduction on the Hurricane Junior Golf Tour, reigning HJGT Player of the Year Corey Carlson of Green Cove Springs, Florida. Carlson’s two-day total of 149 helped propel him into podium position and gives him two top-three finishes in this short season.

Rounding out the Boys competition this weekend was the 10-12 Division. Coming into the Final Round Benjamin Shipp of Duluth, Georgia held a near insurmountable lead and felt very comfortable even with many excellent players in the field this weekend. Shipp was able to couple his first round 73 with an equally impressive 74 in the Final Round to take home his first HJGT Title of the Season and an invitation to play in the season ending Tour Championship at ChampionsGate Golf Club this December. Shipp’s clean sweep of all major player statistics this weekend is a clear indication and warning to HJGT players everywhere that whenever he steps on the course he intends to leave with a victory. Following behind Shipp this weekend were Bishop, Georgia’s Ben Huckaby, 171, and Cameron Barrett of Longwood, Florida, 177, who took home the second and third place trophies respectively.

In the Girls 15-19 Division we had five players separated by just six shots heading into the Final Round and with players from all over the North and South America, as well as, Asia, we saw a heated competition that concluded with one Girl shooting an amazing Final Round, 69, to take home the title. Carrie Metz of Carnesville, Georgia trailed Kellie Edelblut of New Hope, Pennsylvania by a single stroke heading into Sunday’s Final Round; however, after converting on four birdie opportunities Sunday Metz was able to run away from the field and shoot a two-day total, 143, seven strokes ahead of her nearest competitor. Metz looks to take her impressive golf game on the road next season to Kennesaw State where she will immediately make an impact on the relatively new Division I Women’s Golf Team. Following behind Metz on the course and hopefully in career aspirations this weekend were Edelblut (150), Shannon Pak (156) of Kenner, Louisiana and Liting Weng (156) of Taiwan who took home second, and a tie for third place, respectively.

Rounding out this weekend’s Spring Championship was the Girls 10-14 Division where despite playing a very undulated course the Girls managed to post scores well-below expectations. Michaela Owen of nearby Alpharetta, Georgia trailed Vitoria Teixiera by three shots heading into the Final Round; however, with two birdies Sunday was able to move past the Round One Leader and shoot a Final Round 75, to give her a two-day total, 158, five strokes ahead of her next closest competitor. Michaela’s stellar play in the Final Round was paced by her ability to play conservatively and take chances only where she felt utmost certainty. Following behind Owen this weekend was Stephanie Liu of Fernandina Beach, Florda, who despite shooting an 85 in her opening round was able to turn it around and post a seven-over par 78 to finish the tournament with a two-day total 163. Following just one stroke behind Liu and six shots back of our Champion this weekend was Yvonne Zheng of Vancouver, British Columbia who shot two rounds of 82 to take home third place honors at the 2010 HJGT Spring Championship.

Dunne comes from behind in difficult conditions

Back to Back wins for Stevens

Wesley Chapel, FL- On December 5-6, the Hurricane Junior Golf Tour (HJGT) hosted its season-ending, Golfweek/Titleist ranked Tour Championship at the Saddlebrook Resort in Wesley Chapel, Florida. With over 100 players from 16 countries and 11 states, this was the largest field in the HJGT’s two-year history. Heavy, saturating rains and high winds threatened the tournament, but the players were able to complete the entire 36-holes thanks to the hard work of the course staff. Saddlebrook Resort, which is already a difficult course with many hazards, was made even more difficult with the weather. The juniors endured the conditions and the best players came out on top.

In the Boys 16-19 division, the defending champion, Lushen Evans of Summerville, South Carolina, jumped out to an early lead after firing a first round of even-par, 70. Not far behind Evans was Matt Youmans of Lawrenceville, Georgia, who trailed by two after a first round of two-over par, 72. All tied for third place, Gary Dunne of Greystone, Ireland, Josh O’Neal of Simpsonville, South Carolina, and Coley Davis of Bluffton, South Carolina, each turned in a first round of four-over, 74, and were all in contention for the title. During the final round of play, there were large shifts in the leaderboard. Gary Dunne started off his final round hot with birdies on the fourth and fifth holes. After giving a couple back, Dunne finished his final round at even-par, 70, and was able to hold on and take the Boys 16-19 Tour Championship title with a tournament total of 144. Dunne’s win was helped by his par-4 performance, which was the best in the division, and his 28 pars. Patrick Grahek of Alpharetta, Georgia was tied for sixth after his first round of five-over, 75. Grahek played strong his final round and turned in a final round of even-par, 70, for a tournament total of 145. Grahek’s play during the final round moved him into second place in the division. Reed Kerwin of Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina, was also tied for sixth after a first round, 75. Kerwin had two birdies on the front nine to put him at two-under par, but he double bogeyed the 13th and bogeyed the 14th to give him a final round of one-over par, 71. Kerwin’s tournament total of 146 put him into third place. Lushen Evans, the first round leader, was nursing a knee injury and struggled down the final stretch. Evans turned in a final round of 77 for a tournament total of 147 to tie him for fourth. Matt Youmans had a string of bogeys during his final round and final round of 78 and tournament total of 150 dropped him to tie for ninth place.

In the Boys 13-15 division, Chris Sells of Savannah, Georgia took control of the lead after the first round with a three-over, 73. Bernardo Curbelo of Weston, Florida was in second with a first round, 74, and Rigel Fernandes of Mangalore, India was in third with a five-over, 75. The race for the Boys 13-15 Tour Championship title was close, but a few birdies in the final round was the deciding factor. Rigel Fernandes started with a few bogeys during the final round, but he was able to gain some strokes back with two birdies. Fernandes’s par-5 stroke average of 4.50 and 21 pars helped him turn in a final round score of two-over par, 72, and a tournament total of 147 for his third victory on tour this season. Sells also had a few bogeys during the final round, but was unable to gain any strokes back. Sells turned in a final round of five-over par, 75, for a tournament total of 148 and the second place finish. Curbelo faltered a little on the back, but he made a couple of birdies and kept his momentum. Curbelo finished the second round with a 76 and a tournament total of 150, which was just enough to give him third place in the Boys 13-15 division.

In the Boys 10-12 division, Jack Comstock of Jacksonville, Florida, and Tian Yi Cen of Bradenton, Florida were tied for first after each turned in a first round of one-over, 71. Comstock and Cen battled back and forth during the round, but eventually Comstock pulled away and was able to finish two strokes better than Cen on the final day. Comstock’s final round of 74 and a tournament total of 145 gave him the Boys 10-12 division Tour Championship title, his eighth victory of the season. Cen had a final round of 76 for a tournament total of 147 and second place. Roland Morris of Hickory, North Carolina turned in rounds of 81-78 for a tournament total of 159 and a third place finish.

In the Girls 15-19 division, Kristine Odaiyar of Ocala, Florida, took a three-stroke first round lead after firing a one-over par, 71. Sammi Stevens of Hereford, Texas was tied for second after a first round of four-over, 74, and Ai Miyazawa of Miyazakikan, Japan was in fourth after a first round, 76. The final round saw a lot of shifting. Sammi Stevens had bogeys on the sixth and seventh holes, but was able to gain both strokes back with birdies on the 9th and 14th. Stevens’ final round of even-par, 70, was enough to move her into first place with a tournament total of 144. Stevens had the best par-4 performance in the division and the Tour Championship victory makes it back-to-back wins for Stevens. Miyazawa fought for the top spot the entire final round. Her spectacular play gave her a one-under par, 69, the only under par round for the tournament. It was not quite enough for the top spot, but Miyazawa’s tournament total of 145 gave her second place. Kristine Odaiyar had a difficult final round and she turned in a six-over, 76, for a tournament total of 147, which dropped her into third place.

In the Girls 10-14 division, Caroline Quamme of Potomac, Maryland was in the lead after the first round with an 82. Mallory Etcheberry of Wesley Chapel, Florida was in second with an 83 and Mia Zanghetti of Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida was in third with an 85. Mia Zanghetti came back the final round and played wonderfully for a one-over par, 71. Zanghetti’s tournament total of 156 gave her the Tour Championship title in the Girls 10-14 division. Mallory Etcheberry stayed in second place with her final round of 82 and tournament total of 165. Caroline Quamme carded a final round of 84 for a tournament total of 166 and the third place finish.

2009 SJGT Valdosta Junior Classic Results – Freeman, Wolfes and Kioseff Win at Valdosta

Tuesday, November 24th, 2009

Heavy rains forced the cancellation of round two of the Valdosta Junior Classic. The 18 hole event was held on the Plantation and Bottom nines at the Valdosta Country Club. Winners of this event were based on round one scores.

Dylan Freeman of Athens, Ga., and Scott Wolfes of St. Simons Island, Ga., both fired a 1-under 71 in the Male 16-19 division. Both golfers were named co-medalists in the event. Local golfer Dona Kioseff captured the Female 15-19 title after posting a 75.

Freeman and Wolfes had a three-shot advantage in the Male 16-19 Division. Colt Crymes of Athens, Layton Truax of Savannah and Ted Moon of Lilburn, Ga., are all tied for third at 74. Truax claimed the third place award through a scorecard playoff.

Kioseff won by five shots in the Female 15-19 Division over Dakoda Dowd of Palm Harbor, Fla., who carded an 80. Coleman Humphrey of Auburn, Ala., was third with an 83.

In the Male 14-15 Division, Shea Sylvester of Roswell, Ga., won the division after shooting 78. Kameron Williams of Hoschton, Ga., and Luke Miller of Mobile, Ala., were tied for second with 81s. Season-Ending Awards Banquet Honors Top Junior Golfers

Thursday, September 24th, 2009

Atlanta, Ga. (September 24, 2009) - Junior golfers and their families from around the Atlanta area came together to celebrate and be honored at the annual Atlanta Junior Golf (AJG) awards banquet held at prestigious Druid Hills Golf Club.

Kicking off the evening was guest speaker, current President of the Georgia State Golf Association, Chris Cupit, who spoke before more than 150 attendees about his experiences with AJG, the benefits of learning to play golf for a lifetime and personal insights regarding the role of parents as positive role models for their children from his years of involvement with the game of golf.

Matthew McKagen (Powder Springs) and Isabella Skinner (Cumming) were both recognized for their outstanding seasons on the golf course. Each player claimed the coveted Giddings’ Cup at the Grand Championship held in August and top honors at the banquet as Players of the Year in their respective divisions. Skinner also claimed the Metro Atlanta Automobile Dealers Association (MAADA) Award for accruing the highest point average at the end of the season, a perfect 120 points.

Keeping with the tradition of the evening, juniors were recognized for their success in the following categories: All-Atlanta Junior Golf Teams, comprised of the top-10 juniors in the Open and the top-five juniors in the Club divisions; All-Atlanta Junior Golf Academic Teams, recognizing high school boys and girls, who have excelled in the classroom during the previous school year with a 3.5 or higher grade point average; Overall Boys and Girls Grand Champions; and Players of the Year, boys and girls in the Open divisions, who completed the year on top.

The 2009 Junior Golf Ambassador award was presented to long-time Druid Hills golf professional and now Director of Golf, Randall Couch, for his 40 years of dedication to supporting junior and amateur golf alike. Mr. Couch’s steadfast effort to propagate golf is evident in his support of local junior golf and the annual Dogwood Invitational tournament held at the golf club where he works.

Additionally, The Larry Nelson Sportsmanship Award, which identifies one individual who demonstrated outstanding sportsmanship as voted on by summer staff members, was awarded to Nick Fazio (Carrollton). The Most Improved Male and Female Awards were given to Open division players Matthew McKagen and Katherine Skeeles (Marietta), and the Aroha “Roh” Wezner Trophy, similar to the PGA Tour’s Vardon Scoring Trophy, was awarded to Jacob Harper (Valley, AL) for the lowest overall scoring average from the 2009 season, 70.75.

Hurricane Junior Golf Tour Making Strides in Its First Two Years

Monday, September 21st, 2009

Jacksonville, FL- Nearing the end of only its second year, the Hurricane Junior Golf Tour (HJGT) has seen vast improvements in its number of members and the overall quality of its competition and tournaments. Based out of Jacksonville, the HJGT is open to all junior golfers from the ages of 10 to 19 and now hosts tournaments in Florida, Georgia, and South Carolina. The juniors play in one of five divisions: Boys 16-19, Boys 13-15, Boys 10-19, Girls 15-19, and Girls 10-14. Mario Conte, Executive Director, founded the Tour to provide junior golfers with an opportunity to play exceptional courses in a competitive environment. With his low membership fee of $15, he wants this opportunity to be extended to as many junior golfers as possible. Conte says, “I want to be sure that we host memorable tournaments for the players, but I absolutely think that it needs to be affordable.”

Conte started the Hurricane Junior Golf Tour entirely on his own without being backed by golf associations or golf school academies. The HJGT started with a few members and small fields for its tournaments; it has now grown to almost 800 members, with strong competition at the tournaments and the attention of college coaches. In its first year, 26 tournaments were hosted by the Tour, which grew to 37 in the second year, and next year the project number of tournaments is 50. All of the tournaments are ranked by the National Junior Golf Scoreboard and the tournaments held in South Carolina and Georgia have the results submitted for the South Carolina Junior Golf Association Heritage Points. The Tour itself has its own point race and awards the top-10 finishers in each division with points for every tournament. The points accumulate throughout the year and selected age divisions receive American Junior Golf Association exemptions. Points also help determine which players will be extended an invitation to the season ending HJGT Tour Championship on December 5-6, 2009 at Saddlebrook Course in Wesley Chapel, Florida. The top point earners, as well as the champions from each tournament, will have an invitation extended to them. The Tour Championship will be Golfweek/Titleist ranked and will also feature AJGA exemptions.

The Hurricane Junior Golf Tour is committed to preparing juniors for their future and collegiate play. The HJGT tournament play is governed by United States Golf Association rules. The website has an entire section devoted to resources for the players during their college searches and the HJGT has also teamed up with Play Collegiate Golf, which provides a scouting tool for selecting the appropriate university. Sharpsburg’s Sapp Takes Southeastern Junior Golf Title

Thursday, September 17th, 2009

NEWNAN, Ga—Canongate Junior Tour member and Sharpsburg resident Cody Sapp is on quite a roll. The 16 year old high school junior was not only part of the victorious Canongate Nike Cup Team over Labor Day weekend, but he managed to rally from two holes down to win a pivotal point on the final nine to help secure the win for Canongate. Sapp took that momentum with him into the Southeastern Junior Golf Tour (SJGT) event held September 12-13 at Country Club of Columbus where he won the Boys 16-18 age division after firing rounds of 72-69.

“Coming straight from putting on the same type of greens at The Nike Cup at Whitewater Creek really helped my confidence at Country Club of Columbus,” says Sapp. The win was Sapp’s first on the Southeastern Junior Golf Tour, a regional competitive tour that showcases the best junior golf talent in the Southeastern United States. The course in Columbus is certainly atop his favorites as he finished in the top 10 in the same event last year, placing seventh.

Cody-SappThis recent win moves him up to 5th in the point standings among all junior golfers in his age group on the SJGT. He also had a runner-up finish in the Grand Championship event for the Atlanta Junior Golf Association recently, firing rounds of 74-73-74 at Callaway Gardens.

Sapp credits his improved golf swing with time spent under the tutelage of former PGA Tour member David Schreyer, a Canongate instructor teaching out of Braelinn Golf Club in Peachtree City. In addition to his golf swing, Cody feels his mental approach to golf and competition has been aided by mental coach Ben English and a more focused workout program which has increased his strength and stamina.

With a little over a year remaining until early signing dates for college golf scholarships, Sapp has the time and talent to continue climbing the National College Scoreboard rankings and attract the eye of college coaches around the country. If his recent play is any indication of what lies ahead, Sapp will have his share of coaches following his play with great interest.

Stackhouse and Teammates Win 2009 USGA Women’s State Team Championship

Thursday, September 17th, 2009

NEWNAN, Ga. – Up and coming women’s golf star, Mariah Stackhouse, and teammates Laura Coble, 45, of Augusta, and Dori Carter, 22 of Valdosta recently captured the 2009 USGA Women’s State Team Championship. The tournament, held at Sycamore Hills Golf Club in Fort Wayne, Indiana, took place September 1-3. Forty-nine states in the United States were represented at the tournament, with each state fielding a team of its top three women amateurs to compete in the 54 hole match. Team Georgia concluded the tournament with a 54-hole total of 436, outlasting the rest of the field by nine strokes.

Mariah Stackhouse, the youngest member of the Georgia team at 15 years of age, posted a 54 hole total of 222. Getting off to an early start, Mariah concluded the first round of play shooting a 74, helping her team jump out to an early four stroke lead. Day two of the tournament tested the team from Georgia as the team from Minnesota took the overall tournament lead halfway through the second round. Showing some resilience, the Georgia trio came out in the afternoon and regained the tournament lead by three strokes.

As the third round of play was underway, things were not off to a good start for Mariah and her teammates. With a triple bogey six on the par-3 fourth hole Mariah quickly found herself sitting at four over par. Stackhouse then kicked it into gear playing her final 14 holes six under par. Through those 14 holes there was a stretch in which she made four consecutive birdies beginning on number seven continuing with a chip in on eight and a 30-foot putt at the ninth hole. As the third round and the tournament concluded Mariah posted a two under par 70 on her way to helping Georgia win by nine strokes.

2009 has been a spectacular year for Mariah Stackhouse thus far. Since turning 15 early this year she has won the Georgia State Amateur, The Yamaha Women’s Western Open as well as being on winning teams in the 2009 Nike Cup and the USGA Women’s State Team Championship to name a few. As one of the top amateurs in the country the future looks bright for Mariah Stackhouse.

Yowell, Ulp, Stachler and Jones Claim Titles at Fall Classic

September 16, 2009 (Flowery Branch) – It took two sudden-death playoff holes to determine a winner in the Boys 15-18 division after David Yowell (Marietta) and Cameron Winder (Buckhead) were tied at the top of the leader board after 36 holes at 151. Yowell birdied the second playoff hole sticking a wedge shot within six feet on the difficult par-5 18th to defeat Winders. Yowell was able to hang on for the win despite a back nine 41 leading to a second round 78. Winders, victor of two Fall Series events in 2008, has proved to be a real threat in Atlanta Junior Golf (AJG) events so far in 2009 as well. Ross Ward (Gainesville) finished in solo 3rd after a stellar back nine 33 during the final round finishing just two shots out of the lead.

Bailey Ulp (Suwanee) played the most consistent golf of anyone in the field. Ulp’s consecutive rounds of even-par 72 lead him to an eight shot victory in the Boys 13-14 division over Pep Brown (Gainesville). Ulp made eight birdies, more than anyone else in the field. Reeves Bell (Gainesville) finished in 3rd place at 157.

In the Boys 12 & Under division, Ryan Stachler (Milton) carried his momentum from the Summer Series into the fall posting a second round 75 and clearing the field by four shots despite a first round 84. Stachler, 2008 Grand Champion for his division, has placed 1st in every AJG event he has competed in for 2009. Walker Oskin (Duluth) finished in 2nd place at 163 one shot ahead of 3rd place finisher Spencer Ralston (Gainesville).

Kayla Jones (Alpharetta) also continued her great from play from the summer, shooting 86-82–168 to finish in first place, two shots ahead of Margaret Yeh (Cumming). Camryn Cole (Gainesville) finished in solo 3rd place.

Held Saturday and Sunday September 12-13 at Royal Lakes Golf & Country Club in Flowery Branch, Ga. this was the 3rd annual playing of the 36-Hole Fall Classic.

The third annual Nike Cup was a tremendous success in bringing some of the top juniors from two strong golf states together by way of support from Nike Golf, Canongate Golf Clubs, and the Robert Trent Jones Trail.  Additional local sponsor support came from Chick Fil A and BB&T Bank.  The event has seen tremendous growth and attention in just its third year as several juniors competing in this event are ranked in the top 100 junior golfers in the world.

The Canongate Junior Tour consists of 250 juniors from all of the Canongate Golf Clubs, with top juniors in each age division earning a position on the Nike Cup Team after a year-round competitive schedule.  This competitive junior golf tour is designed to take junior golfers from the first stages of competitive golf to higher levels. Players ages 7 to 17 compete in events throughout the year and four “major” events in which the juniors earn points for the Junior Golf Scoreboard rankings.  For more information, visit www.cgperformancecenters.com.
